Maine wakes up to rattling windows and wet pavement, with wind whipping across open fields and rain tapping steadily on rooftops. Conditions change quickly today, and what feels manageable now sets the stage for a dangerous winter turn across northern Maine.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, a Wind Advisory remains in effect this morning, with west winds gusting up to 50 mph. Those winds make driving difficult for high-profile vehicles along Route 1, Route 161, and exposed rural roads. Tree limbs may fall, and isolated power outages remain possible early.

Rain continues this morning, but colder air pours in behind a cold front. Temperatures drop fast today, falling below freezing this evening. Roads that look merely wet now may ice over quickly, especially after sunset.

Snow develops late tonight and intensifies Sunday. A Winter Weather Advisory takes effect early Sunday, with total snow accumulations expected between 4 and 7 inches across much of the Central Highlands, Far Northern Maine, and the North Woods. Blowing and drifting snow will reduce visibility, especially in open areas north and east of Caribou.

Sunday night brings the most hazardous conditions. Strong winds combine with falling snow, creating near-whiteout bursts at times. Travel could become treacherous, with plows struggling to keep up and visibility dropping rapidly. Plan to avoid non-essential travel Sunday night into early Monday.

Monday stays cold and unsettled, with lingering snow showers and patchy blowing snow. Highs remain in the 20s, keeping untreated roads slick. By Tuesday, conditions improve slightly, though cold air holds firm.

Across the region, wintry weather expands from the Great Lakes into New England this weekend, while Maine sits firmly in the storm’s colder zone.

By late January, Caribou gains roughly 40 extra minutes of daylight, but winter still controls the roads for now.
