Caribou, Maine – Warm, sunny weather returns to northern Maine Saturday, but don’t let the temperatures fool you—dangerous cold water conditions persist across the region’s lakes and rivers.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, a Cold Water Safety Statement remains in effect through the weekend as air temperatures climb into the mid-60s to 70s, while water temperatures hover in the 50s and low 60s. Officials warn that immersion in these cold waters can lead to hypothermia in minutes, even on sunny days. The Maine Warden Service reminds boaters, kayakers, and swimmers to wear life jackets and use extreme caution.
Saturday will bring mostly sunny skies and a high near 67°F, with light winds making outdoor plans appealing. Sunday looks even warmer, reaching 71°F under partly sunny skies. By Monday, Caribou could see 75°F and mostly sunny conditions—ideal for Father’s Day outings, but still a safety concern near water bodies like Chamberlain Lake and the Penobscot River.
Travelers on Route 1 and Route 11 should also be cautious near water access points where recreational traffic may increase. The NWS urges anyone recreating in cold water to “paddle smart from the start.”
Showers return Monday night into Tuesday, bringing a slight cool-down and higher humidity. Thunderstorms are possible by midweek.
