Caribou, Maine – Slippery roads are expected across northern Maine early Monday as freezing rain and light snow spread across the region, creating icy travel conditions during the morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for much of northern and central Maine until noon Monday. Forecasters say mixed precipitation could produce up to 1 inch of snow and around 0.10 inches of ice, while wind gusts may reach 35 mph.

Communities including Caribou, Presque Isle, Fort Kent, Houlton, Millinocket, and Greenville may experience slick pavement as freezing rain coats untreated roads. Gusty winds may also reduce visibility at times and push snow across rural highways.

Travel could be especially hazardous along U.S. Route 1, Route 11, and Route 159, where icy patches may develop quickly during heavier bursts of freezing rain.

Farther south in Lincoln, Dover-Foxcroft, Milo, and Guilford, a separate advisory runs from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday, where a light glaze of ice could form before temperatures gradually rise.

Drivers are urged to slow down, leave extra following distance, and check the latest road conditions through NewEngland511 before heading out. Conditions should improve by midday Monday as precipitation tapers off and road crews continue treatment efforts.
