Caribou, Maine – Temperatures across northern Maine are expected to dip into the mid-30s tonight, prompting a frost advisory from the National Weather Service that will remain in effect from 11 p.m. Monday until 8 a.m. Tuesday. Sensitive outdoor plants may be at risk if left uncovered.

According to the National Weather Service office in Caribou, the advisory covers Aroostook, Penobscot, Piscataquis, Somerset and surrounding northern counties. Cold air settling in overnight will allow frost to form in valleys and open fields, particularly in rural farming areas where crops and gardens remain active into September.

Communities including Caribou, Presque Isle, Fort Kent, Houlton, Millinocket and Ashland should expect the coldest temperatures near dawn. Residents are urged to cover flowers and vegetables or bring potted plants inside to prevent damage.

Drivers should also be prepared for reduced visibility early Tuesday morning, as patchy fog may accompany frost in low-lying areas. While roads are not expected to ice, cooler surfaces may still feel damp and slick before sunrise.

The frost advisory is expected to expire after 8 a.m. Tuesday as temperatures rebound into the 60s by afternoon. Additional frost advisories remain possible later this week if clear skies and calm nights continue.
