Maine – Gray skies and fine, wind-blown snow sweep across the fields and pines of Caribou and the North Woods this morning, marking a true December start to the winter season. The air bites sharply at 6°F, and every exhale hangs briefly before freezing into the cold dawn.

The National Weather Service in Caribou reports a winter storm continuing through this evening, with snow accumulations of 3 to 4 inches expected across northern Aroostook County. The heaviest snow is centered north of Presque Isle, with lighter totals farther west toward Allagash.

While this isn’t a blockbuster storm, steady accumulation on cold pavement means slick conditions for drivers on U.S. Route 1, Route 161, and rural roads near the Canadian border. Visibility may briefly drop under heavier bursts, especially during the midday commute.

By late evening, the snow tapers off as temperatures plunge into the single digits. Wednesday brings sunshine but bitter cold, with highs near 26°F and lows around 15°F. More light snow showers return Thursday, followed by a frigid, mostly sunny Friday as the Arctic air mass strengthens.

Early December across northern Maine means the return of snowpack, frost, and icy travel mornings. Keep snow brushes handy, drive cautiously, and watch for “black ice” on shaded stretches through week’s end.
