Caribou, ME – The first flakes have already started to fall across Aroostook County this morning, signaling the return of early-winter weather. Meteorologists warn that 1 to 3 inches of snow could accumulate through this evening, followed by another round of snow and possible mixed precipitation Tuesday as a second storm takes aim at northern Maine.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, today’s snow will spread north through midday, briefly mixing with rain near Houlton before tapering by midnight. Travelers along U.S. Route 1 and I-95 should expect slippery stretches, reduced visibility, and areas of drifting snow, especially during the afternoon.

Monday brings a short break with partial clearing, but don’t let the calm fool you. A stronger system is expected to arrive late Tuesday, possibly producing another 2 to 4 inches of accumulation across central and northern Maine. If the storm tracks slightly north, parts of Aroostook and Penobscot Counties could see heavier totals.

Temperatures will hold near freezing much of the week, meaning roads could refreeze at night, creating patchy black ice hazards through early Wednesday.

Five-Day Outlook:

  • Sunday: Snow, 1–3 inches, high 30°F.
  • Monday: Mostly sunny, high 31°F.
  • Tuesday: Snow likely, high 24°F.
  • Wednesday: Mostly sunny, high 26°F.
  • Thursday: Snow returning, high 31°F.
