Bangor, ME – Flooding tied to shifting ice jams is already impacting parts of central and northern Maine, with road concerns in place now and a round of accumulating snow set to follow by Friday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, a Flood Warning remains in effect for the Piscataquis River from Medford to Howland until noon Thursday, where ice jam flooding is affecting areas near Maxfield and North Howland Road. A Flood Advisory is also in place for the Pleasant River from Brownville to Milo through midday Thursday, with minor flooding and the potential for sudden changes if ice shifts.
Localized road impacts are possible near river crossings and low-lying routes, especially in Piscataquis County. Officials warn that ice jams can move առանց warning, quickly changing water levels and expanding flooded areas.
Drier weather holds through Thursday, but attention quickly turns to a developing system. Northern and central Maine could see a couple inches of snow beginning Friday night into early Saturday, with probabilities reaching around 65% for more than 3 inches near Presque Isle and Houlton. Bangor and Downeast areas face lower chances, with a mix of rain possible closer to the coast.
Residents should avoid flooded roads, stay alert near rivers, and prepare for changing travel conditions heading into the weekend. Additional advisories may be issued as both flooding and snowfall threats evolve.
