Caribou, ME – Drivers across northern Maine should be prepared for blowing snow and reduced visibility through this morning and afternoon as strong winds and lingering snow showers affect the region, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Caribou.
Gusty westerly winds of 30 to 40 mph, with isolated higher gusts in exposed areas, are expected through early evening. These winds, combined with freshly fallen fluffy snow, will create blowing and drifting snow, especially near open agricultural fields and along major travel corridors in the Crown of Maine.
According to the NWS, several key roadways could be impacted today, including Routes 1, 1A, 2, 2A, 10, 11, 89, 161, 163, 164, 205, 212, and 227. Drivers may encounter snow-covered roads and rapidly changing visibility, especially in northern Aroostook County from Frenchville to Caribou, Presque Isle, Houlton, and surrounding areas.
Light snow will continue into the afternoon with the potential for an additional inch or two in some locations. Snow showers are expected to taper tonight as low pressure moves northeast and shortwave energy exits the region.
A Gale Warning is in effect for coastal waters, with hazardous marine conditions expected from this morning through early afternoon for intra-coastal waters and into this evening for outer waters.
Residents and travelers are urged to use caution, allow extra time, and stay updated on local road conditions throughout the day. Even brief bursts of blowing snow may lead to sudden reductions in visibility.
