Caribou, Maine – A wintry mix moving into northern Maine tonight is expected to transition into widespread snow late Saturday night, with significant accumulation possible by Sunday.

According to the U.S. National Weather Service office in Caribou, precipitation will arrive this evening mainly as rain and snow, though isolated pockets of freezing rain or sleet cannot be ruled out. Forecasters say any snow or sleet accumulation tonight should remain light as temperatures rise above freezing.

Gusty winds are expected overnight into early Saturday morning, especially across northern portions of the state. These winds could contribute to reduced visibility at times and may make travel more difficult, particularly in exposed areas.

The National Weather Service reports that snow will overspread the region late Saturday night into Sunday and continue through Sunday night. Moderate snowfall is possible, with the potential for more than six inches of accumulation across northern Maine. Some areas could see locally higher totals, depending on how precipitation bands develop.

Forecasters noted that lighter precipitation amounts or mixing could reduce totals farther south, but confidence is higher for impactful snow across the northern counties.

Looking ahead, arctic air is expected to move back into the region toward the end of next week, bringing temperatures back below normal after the weekend system exits.

Residents are encouraged to monitor forecasts closely and prepare for changing road conditions, particularly late Saturday night through Sunday. Slippery roads and reduced visibility may affect travel during that period.

The system may impact Sunday travel for commuters, students returning to campuses, and weekend workers across northern Maine.
