Caribou, ME – Winter travel conditions are expected across northern and eastern Maine this weekend, with two separate weather systems bringing snow Friday and a more organized round of wintry weather by Sunday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, snow showers will develop across northern Maine on Friday, occasionally becoming heavy enough to reduce visibility. Around an inch of accumulation is possible in the northern tier, including Frenchville, Caribou, Presque Isle, Houlton, Millinocket, and surrounding communities. Gusty winds overnight will produce cold wind chills, dropping to the low-to-mid teens across much of the region. Gale conditions are possible over coastal waters Friday night.
Saturday brings a break in the active pattern, with partly cloudy skies and highs in the 30s statewide. Breezy conditions will continue, but no significant precipitation is expected.
A stronger system approaches on Sunday, with precipitation spreading west to east early in the day. Coastal locations such as Bar Harbor, Machias, Eastport, and portions of Downeast Maine will start as rain, while inland communities begin as snow, including areas north of Bangor. As temperatures rise slightly Sunday afternoon, many inland locations south of Dover–Foxcroft and Houlton may transition from snow to rain.
Far northern Maine is expected to remain cold enough for a few inches of snow, particularly around Caribou, Presque Isle, Fort Kent, Frenchville, and neighboring areas. The NWS warns of potential travel disruptions Sunday afternoon and evening due to changing precipitation types and gusty winds.
Lingering showers continue into Monday morning, followed by cloudy skies and highs in the 30s north and 40s Downeast.
