Caribou, Maine – Much-needed rain is on the way for northern Maine late Sunday through early Tuesday, with the heaviest downpours expected in the north and northwest counties. Coastal Downeast Maine, however, is likely to miss out on significant relief, with only about a 25% chance of more than a quarter inch of rain during the period.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, the best shot for steady rainfall arrives Sunday night into Monday evening. Northern Aroostook and Piscataquis counties could see up to an inch or more, while inland Penobscot and Somerset counties have strong odds of widespread showers. Areas hardest hit by drought near the coast remain unlikely to see more than light, scattered rain.
Drivers across interior Maine should watch for slick roads during the Monday morning commute, particularly along Route 11 and Interstate 95 near Houlton and Caribou. Farmers and loggers in northern counties may benefit from the rainfall, though outdoor plans and fieldwork could be delayed.
The National Weather Service advises residents to stay alert for additional rainfall updates through Tuesday as scattered showers linger.
