Presque Isle, Maine – A large plume of smoke seen across Aroostook County Tuesday afternoon is the result of a controlled burn in Presque Isle, not a wildfire. The smoke has been visible for miles, including on the FAA weather webcam in Caribou, raising questions from drivers and residents.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, the burn is taking place between Caribou Road, McBurnie Road, and Chandler Road in Presque Isle. The Presque Isle Fire Department confirmed the operation is intentional and fully monitored.
Motorists traveling near the burn area may encounter reduced visibility, especially along rural stretches of roadway, and are urged to use caution. Fire officials emphasized that the situation poses no immediate danger to nearby communities.
Residents may notice the smell of smoke through Tuesday evening, but authorities said the burn is expected to remain under control and will continue only as long as conditions allow. No evacuations or additional alerts have been issued.
Updates will be provided if wind shifts cause changes in smoke movement or if conditions prompt further advisories.
