Traverse City, Michigan – Dangerous Arctic cold continues to grip northern Michigan early Saturday, keeping residents under an Extreme Cold Warning as life-threatening temperatures and wind chills persist through the morning and into the early afternoon in some areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, the Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect until 11 a.m. EST for all of Northern Lower Michigan, including Grand Traverse, Leelanau, Antrim, Alpena, Otsego, Roscommon, and Crawford counties. Interior communities have seen air temperatures fall to 25 to 30 below zero, while wind chills have dropped to 35 to 40 below in the coldest locations. Along the lakeshores, temperatures are slightly higher but still dangerous, with wind chills between 20 and 30 below.
Farther north, parts of eastern Upper Michigan, including Chippewa and Mackinac counties and Mackinac Island, remain under an Extreme Cold Warning until 1 p.m. EST. Those areas are experiencing air temperatures between 15 and 30 below zero, with similarly dangerous wind chills.
Communities impacted include Traverse City, Petoskey, Alpena, Gaylord, Cadillac, Charlevoix, Mackinaw City, and Beaver Island. Frostbite can develop on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes, making outdoor activity hazardous even for short periods.
Officials urge residents to limit time outdoors, dress in multiple layers, and ensure pets and livestock have warm shelter and unfrozen water. Conditions are expected to gradually improve later today, but dangerously cold temperatures may linger, and additional advisories could be issued if Arctic air remains entrenched.
