Nashville, TN – Residents across the Tennessee Valley will have the rare opportunity to witness the Northern Lights tonight, as a severe G4 geomagnetic storm is expected to bring the aurora as far south as the region.

According to the National Weather Service, the best viewing times are between 10 p.m. Thursday and 4 a.m. Friday. The skies are expected to be mostly clear, with a low of around 50 degrees and calm north-northeast winds.

The geomagnetic storm is caused by solar winds impacting Earth’s magnetic field, creating this rare light show. While usually visible in the far north, this powerful storm allows those in the Tennessee Valley to experience the phenomenon.

For the best chance to see the aurora, residents are encouraged to find open areas with minimal light pollution. With clear skies forecasted again on Friday, temperatures will rise to a high of 78 degrees, providing ideal conditions for viewing this celestial event.
