Northern Iowa – Accumulating snow is expected to return to parts of northern Iowa late Tuesday, with slick road conditions possible during the evening hours, according to the National Weather Service in Des Moines.

Forecasters say a quick-moving system could bring 1 to 2 inches of snow for most locations, with locally higher amounts possible along and north of the Iowa–Minnesota border. While snowfall totals are not expected to be extreme, even light accumulations could impact travel, especially as snow develops near the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service, snow is expected to begin between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Tuesday across northern Iowa and continue into the night, with precipitation ending after midnight. The snow is expected to fall over a relatively short period, increasing the risk for rapidly changing road conditions.

Areas highlighted for the greatest potential impacts include north-central and northeast Iowa, where localized totals could exceed 2 inches. Cities near the Iowa–Minnesota border may see snow-covered roads develop more quickly than areas farther south.

The National Weather Service cautions that roads may become slick from accumulating snow, particularly on untreated surfaces, bridges, and overpasses. Drivers are urged to use caution Tuesday evening, allow extra travel time, and be prepared for reduced traction.

No widespread travel advisories were announced at the time of the update, but conditions could deteriorate quickly if snowfall rates briefly increase. The situation remains typical of winter clipper-style systems, where short-duration snowfall still produces meaningful travel impacts.

Commuters, students, and evening travelers across northern Iowa are encouraged to monitor updates from the National Weather Service and local road condition reports as Tuesday approaches.
