Des Moines, Iowa – A powerful line of storms will sweep across northern Iowa late tonight into Tuesday morning, bringing damaging winds and the risk of hail or even a brief tornado along the Iowa–Minnesota border.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, storms will build over South Dakota and southern Minnesota Monday afternoon before racing southeast through the evening and overnight hours. The greatest threat lies across north-central Iowa—including Mason City, Fort Dodge, and Decorah—where severe storms are likely and wind gusts could exceed 70 mph.

The NWS has placed areas near the Minnesota border under a Level 3 (Enhanced Risk), with potential for widespread wind damage. Cities such as Algona and Charles City are urged to stay weather-aware as the line of storms moves through between midnight and 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Hail up to 1 inch and a brief tornado can’t be ruled out, especially with any isolated supercells forming ahead of the main line. Travel could be impacted by debris or fallen limbs overnight, and residents should secure outdoor items and have multiple ways to receive alerts.

Storm threats will diminish by late Tuesday morning, but further advisories may follow if conditions evolve.
