Des Moines, IA – A powerful winter storm blanketed northern Iowa with more than 14 inches of snow on this week, causing hazardous travel conditions and widespread disruptions. The heaviest accumulations were reported in Kossuth County and surrounding areas, with Mason City recording a peak total of 14.5 inches.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Des Moines, the blizzard brought whiteout conditions, strong winds, and drifting snow, making travel treacherous. Fort Dodge recorded 12.5 inches, while areas near Sioux City and Harlan received between 7 and 9 inches. The snowfall tapered off by late evening, but icy roads and strong winds continue to pose risks.

Authorities have urged residents to limit travel, as road crews work to clear major highways and local streets. The Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT) reported numerous vehicle accidents and stranded motorists due to snow-covered roads and reduced visibility.

Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing in the coming days, keeping icy conditions in place. Residents are advised to check local forecasts and road conditions before traveling. Additional snow reports are expected as more data becomes available, with the NWS encouraging residents to report snowfall amounts.
