Des Moines, IA – Strong winds and light snow are set to create hazardous travel conditions across northern Iowa today, particularly along Highway 18. Forecasters warn that wind gusts of 30-45 mph will combine with intermittent snow, leading to visibility reductions of one mile or less in some areas.

According to the National Weather Service, the strongest winds will arrive by midday and persist into the evening. Drivers of high-profile vehicles and those traveling with unsecured items like Christmas decorations should take extra precautions as winds could create significant hazards. Affected areas include northern Iowa, particularly towns along the Emmetsburg to Waterloo corridor, where untreated roads may become slick due to freezing rain and snow accumulation of less than an inch.

Residents are urged to check local conditions before heading out and limit unnecessary travel. Wind advisories are in effect across northern and western counties, with the heaviest impacts expected this afternoon.

Looking ahead, Friday is expected to remain breezy, with temperatures dropping to a high of 27°F and overnight lows in the teens. Saturday will bring calmer winds and sunny skies, with a high near 32°F. Sunday offers another sunny day, with highs reaching 41°F, while temperatures will warm to 48°F by Monday.
