Indiana – Gray skies hang low this morning as cold air settles in, and light snow begins to reappear across northern Indiana. Pavement looks dry in spots, but a thin glaze is already forming on shaded roads as winter tightens its grip heading into the new year.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, light snow will redevelop later today, especially closer to Lake Michigan, and continue into early New Year’s Day. While snowfall totals remain modest, repeated bursts of snow could still affect travel, particularly north of U.S. 30.
Fort Wayne, Huntington, Warsaw, and Auburn may see periods of snow showers through tonight. Winds stay noticeable, adding a chill and briefly reducing visibility during heavier bands. Roads that appear merely damp can quickly turn slick as temperatures hover in the 20s.
Snow chances linger into tonight, with additional light accumulations possible on untreated surfaces. Even minor snowfall may compact under traffic, raising the risk of flash freezing after any daytime melting.
New Year’s Day 2026 brings a quieter pattern. Skies turn partly sunny, though cold air remains firmly in place. Highs struggle to reach the mid-20s, limiting improvement on secondary roads during the morning hours.
By Friday, conditions stay dry but cold. Mostly sunny skies offer little warmth, and overnight lows fall into the teens. The first weekend of 2026 remains subdued, with mostly cloudy skies and highs in the upper 20s to near 30.
Drivers should plan extra time today, especially along U.S. 30 and rural routes. Slow down during snow showers, and watch for sudden slick spots near bridges and overpasses.
