Fort Wayne, IN – A fast-moving winter storm could bring up to a foot of snow across northern Indiana beginning early Saturday, threatening dangerous holiday weekend travel along I-69, US 30, and surrounding rural routes.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, a Winter Storm Watch takes effect at 4 a.m. Saturday and lasts through 1 p.m. Sunday. Widespread snow, gusty winds, and pockets of lake effect bands are expected, with accumulations between 6–12 inches, especially in areas northwest of I-69.
The most hazardous conditions are forecast Saturday afternoon into early Sunday, when snowfall may rapidly reduce visibility to near zero, especially along US 30, I-69, and US 6. Roads may become slick and snow-covered, and the risk of whiteout conditions will rise near lake effect bands.
Drivers are urged to delay non-essential travel and use extreme caution on secondary roads. Wind chills will dip into the teens and low 20s, adding to travel risks.
More advisories may be issued through the weekend, especially if snow rates intensify or mixing occurs farther south. The National Weather Service will continue to update the region as conditions develop.
