South Bend, Ind. – Beachgoers heading to southeast Lake Michigan this Memorial Day weekend will enjoy sunshine but face real risks in the water, especially Friday when 2 to 3-foot waves could create dangerous swim conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, a Moderate Swim Risk is in place Friday due to wave action and currents, particularly affecting Berrien County beaches. By Saturday and Sunday, wave heights fall to 1–2 feet and the swim risk drops to Low, though cold water remains a serious hazard.

Highs inland will climb into the mid to upper 60s across Northern Indiana, including Elkhart, Fort Wayne, and South Bend. However, lakeshore towns like Michigan City and LaPorte will stay cooler, with highs only in the 50s near the water. Despite the sunshine, Lake Michigan’s water temperature is holding near 50°F—cold enough to cause hypothermia in minutes.

Officials urge anyone near the lake to wear a life jacket, avoid swimming alone, and know the signs of cold shock. Sunny weather may feel inviting, but the water remains deceptively dangerous.

Temperatures rise slightly into Memorial Day, with clouds and isolated showers possible Monday afternoon. Additional beach hazard statements could be issued if wave heights increase.
