South Bend, Indiana – Hazardous winter travel is expected to develop across northern Indiana beginning Wednesday and intensify Wednesday night into Thursday as a lake-effect snow event targets the South Bend area with accumulating snow, strong winds, and sharply reduced visibility.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Wednesday morning through early Thursday afternoon for St. Joseph County and nearby areas. Light system snow is expected to begin Wednesday morning, transitioning to lake-effect snow by Wednesday afternoon. Snowfall rates are expected to increase significantly Wednesday night, with total accumulations of 4 to 9 inches possible in and around South Bend.

The most dangerous conditions are expected late Wednesday night through Thursday morning, when lake-effect snow bands could produce near-whiteout conditions at times. Northwest wind gusts approaching 35 mph may lead to blowing and drifting snow, especially on open roadways. Visibility could drop rapidly from clear to near zero within seconds under heavier snow bands.

Travel impacts are likely along major routes including Interstate 94, U.S. 31, U.S. 20, and State Road 12. Slick and snow-covered roads could make the Thursday morning commute especially hazardous. Officials urge drivers to consider alternate travel plans, allow extra time, or delay travel if possible.

Wind chills are expected to fall near zero during the coldest part of the storm early Thursday, increasing the risk for frostbite with prolonged exposure. Motorists are advised to carry winter emergency supplies and ensure vehicles are prepared for severe winter conditions.

Snow is expected to taper later Thursday afternoon, though lingering slick spots may persist. Additional rounds of lake-effect snow are possible later in the week into early next week. Residents are urged to monitor updates closely as watches may be upgraded to warnings if confidence continues to increase.
