Fort Wayne, Indiana – Drivers across northern Indiana should prepare for changing travel conditions this week as a shift toward colder air brings increasing chances for accumulating snow, especially by midweek.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, above-average temperatures will continue through the next couple of days, with mild conditions lingering into Tuesday. By Wednesday, a favorable lake effect snow setup is expected to develop, bringing periods of accumulating snow and reduced visibility that could affect both Wednesday and Thursday morning commutes.
The heaviest lake effect snowfall is expected west of U.S. 31, impacting areas near South Bend, LaPorte, and portions of northwest Indiana. Rain is expected to transition to snow early Wednesday, with colder air deepening Thursday and allowing lake effect snow to continue in far northern counties. Gusty winds may further reduce visibility during heavier snow bands.
Looking ahead, forecasters are also monitoring a broader weather system expected to arrive Friday into Saturday. This system could bring a more widespread chance for accumulating snow across much of northern Indiana, expanding impacts beyond the lake effect belts.
Residents are encouraged to stay updated on forecast changes, especially those with midweek travel plans. Slower travel speeds, extra commute time, and winter-ready vehicles are advised as snow chances increase later this week. Additional advisories or winter weather alerts may be issued as confidence in snowfall amounts improves.
