Northern Indiana is in for a rapidly changing weather day, according to the National Weather Service, as rain, strong winds, and sharply falling temperatures combine to create potentially hazardous conditions through tonight and into early Friday.

Rain showers are expected to develop this morning and continue through the day, with the heaviest rainfall occurring this afternoon and evening. Many locations could see one-quarter to one-half inch of rain, which may lead to ponding on roadways and reduced visibility during peak travel times. As colder air surges into the region later this afternoon and evening, rain will transition to snow showers, beginning west to east.

Temperatures will follow a roller-coaster pattern. Afternoon highs will reach the mid-40s to low-50s, but readings will begin to fall quickly late in the day. By Friday morning, lows will drop into the teens, marking a dramatic temperature change in less than 24 hours.

Strong winds will add to the impacts. Southerly winds will increase this morning, with gusts of 35 to 40 mph expected this afternoon ahead of a cold front. Isolated gusts could reach 45 mph, especially near stronger showers. Winds will remain breezy overnight, with gusts still exceeding 30 mph at times.

Snow accumulation is expected to be light for most areas, with a dusting possible this evening. However, near Lake Michigan, localized totals could approach one inch. Falling temperatures combined with lingering moisture could result in slick roads, although gusty winds may limit ice formation in some locations.

Residents across Fort Wayne, South Bend, Elkhart, and surrounding communities are encouraged to stay weather-aware, secure loose outdoor items, and use caution while traveling, especially this evening as conditions deteriorate. This system marks a clear transition to much colder winter weather heading into Friday.
