South Bend, Indiana – Residents across northern Indiana could face a dramatic weather shift late Sunday as thunderstorms move through the region before colder air brings snow and strong winds by Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, a powerful storm system developing across the Midwest will bring thunderstorms Sunday night capable of producing damaging wind gusts, especially across communities including South Bend, Elkhart, Warsaw and Fort Wayne.
Temperatures are expected to climb into the mid-60s to near 70 degrees Sunday afternoon, creating conditions supportive of storms as a strong cold front pushes east through the state.
Once the front moves through, the weather will change rapidly. Forecasters say temperatures will crash into the 20s Monday, allowing rain to transition to accumulating snow across parts of northern Indiana, particularly toward northwest Indiana and southwest Michigan.
Strong winds behind the system could create blowing snow and reduced visibility, especially along major routes including Interstates 80/90, 69 and the Indiana Toll Road.
By Monday night, wind chills could fall near zero degrees, creating sharply colder conditions after the brief springlike warmth Sunday.
Residents should monitor forecast updates and prepare for rapidly changing conditions from severe storms Sunday night to winter-like weather by Monday.
