South Bend, Ind. – Northern Indiana is starting the week with sweltering heat and storm chances, as temperatures climb into the upper 80s and humidity pushes heat indices into the 90s. The National Weather Service warns the peak discomfort will occur today and Tuesday, especially west of U.S. 31 and south of U.S. 24.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected through midweek. While severe storms are not anticipated, heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and frequent lightning may cause brief travel disruptions. The highest risk of storms will be during the afternoon and evening hours.

Cities including South Bend, Elkhart, and Fort Wayne will see temperatures topping out between 83 and 88 degrees on Tuesday before conditions gradually ease. By Wednesday, highs dip back into the upper 70s to low 80s, with lower humidity offering a break. Roads may become slick during downpours, and residents are advised to allow extra travel time and avoid outdoor activities during lightning.

The pattern turns drier by Thursday with partly sunny skies and more comfortable conditions, bringing welcome relief after several hot, unsettled days. Additional advisories could be issued if storm coverage increases.
