ELKHART, Ind. – A burst of lake-effect and light system snow is creating slippery travel across much of northern Indiana and southwestern Michigan early Monday, with several rounds of snow expected through late Monday night. Forecasters say most areas will receive 2 to 4 inches, though locally higher amounts are possible under stronger lake-effect bands.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect through 1 a.m. EST Tuesday for counties including Elkhart, Kosciusko, Fulton, Pulaski, Cass (MI), and through 9 a.m. EST Monday for Grant, Wabash, White, Miami, and Cass (IN).

The first round of snow will taper off after sunrise, leaving slick and snow-covered roads on U.S. 6, U.S. 30, and I-69. A second wave of lake-effect snow is expected to redevelop by Monday afternoon and persist into the evening, bringing additional bursts of heavy snow and rapidly changing visibility near Elkhart, Warsaw, and Rochester.

Travelers should expect hazardous conditions during both the morning and evening commutes, with roads becoming icy, especially on bridges and rural highways. Drivers are urged to slow down and increase following distance, as visibility may drop below a quarter mile in the heaviest snow bands.

Conditions will improve late Monday night as lake-effect activity weakens.
