Northern Indiana – If you’re heading to the beach today, think twice before diving in. A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect along southern Lake Michigan in Indiana, warning of dangerous swimming conditions due to 3–4 foot waves, strong rip currents, and high surf.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, beach conditions remain hazardous through Friday, gradually improving into Saturday. Hazy skies and mild temperatures may attract visitors, but authorities urge extreme caution along beaches near Michigan City and the Indiana Dunes.
Beach swim risk is rated “high” for Friday, meaning swimming is strongly discouraged. Waves will drop to 1–3 feet Saturday, with a “moderate” risk still in place.
The public is reminded to wear life jackets, avoid piers, and never swim alone—especially during red flag warnings.
Wave activity should return to low levels by Sunday, with sunny skies prevailing into early next week.
