SOUTH BEND, Ind. – A strong lake-effect snow event continues to pound northern Indiana and southwest Michigan, bringing bursts of heavy snow and near-zero visibility late Sunday into Monday. Snowfall totals between 3 and 6 inches are expected, with localized higher amounts in La Porte County, where lake bands remain most persistent.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 1 a.m. EST Tuesday for La Porte, Starke, Marshall, and St. Joseph Counties in Indiana, and Berrien County in southwest Michigan. The heaviest snow is expected overnight into early Monday, with another round developing Monday afternoon as winds shift slightly off Lake Michigan.

Forecasters warn that strong northwest winds may cause blowing snow and sporadic power outages due to the weight of snow on tree limbs. Travel along Interstates 80, 90, and U.S. 31 may become dangerous at times, especially near Michigan City and La Porte, where visibility could drop rapidly within active snow bands.

Drivers are urged to avoid nonessential travel and to keep extra supplies, including flashlights and blankets, in their vehicles. Power crews are monitoring outages as wet snow and gusts over 30 mph strain lines. Conditions are expected to improve gradually after midnight Monday night as the lake-effect snow weakens and shifts northward.
