Northern Indiana – The National Weather Service (NWS) is warning of a wintry system expected to arrive this weekend, bringing a mix of rain, snow, and sharply colder air across northern Indiana and southern Lower Michigan.

According to the NWS Northern Indiana office, rain will develop Saturday afternoon and likely mix with or change to snow overnight north of U.S. 6. Light accumulations around one inch are possible across far northeast Indiana and adjacent areas of southwest Michigan.

A mix of rain and snow on Sunday will gradually transition to lake effect snow by late afternoon, continuing through Monday. The heaviest snowfall potential exists near Lake Michigan, with localized accumulations of up to 4 inches possible from La Porte to South Bend and Benton Harbor.

Forecasters noted the greatest travel impacts are expected Sunday night into Monday morning, as lake effect snow and strong northwest winds may reduce visibility and create slick roads. Temperatures will fall into the low 20s overnight, with wind chills dropping into the teens. Highs on Monday are expected to remain in the upper 30s.

Confidence remains moderate in snowfall totals but high for a significant cooldown to start the workweek. Commuters should plan for slower travel Monday morning, particularly in northwest Indiana and southwest Michigan.
