South Bend, Indiana – The severe weather threat has increased across parts of northern Indiana today, with forecasters upgrading the risk level ahead of storms expected this afternoon and evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, portions of western Indiana have been upgraded from a Marginal Risk to a Slight Risk for severe weather. The highest risk window is expected between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m. Sunday.

Forecasters say the primary threat is damaging wind gusts, with storms capable of producing strong to locally damaging winds as they move through the region. An isolated tornado is also possible, though the tornado risk remains lower than the wind threat. Small hail and localized heavy rainfall may accompany the strongest storms.

The Storm Prediction Center highlights areas of western Indiana under the higher risk level, while surrounding areas remain under a marginal severe threat. Storms are expected to move quickly, which could result in sudden changes in conditions.

Residents are urged to remain weather-aware throughout the afternoon and evening, especially those with outdoor plans. The National Weather Service recommends having multiple ways to receive weather warnings and being prepared to seek shelter quickly if warnings are issued.

For commuters and evening travelers across northern Indiana, storms may impact travel conditions during peak hours.

Additional updates and any watches or warnings will be issued as storms develop.
