South Bend, Indiana – Northern Indiana residents could see renewed winter travel issues as a late-January weather pattern increases the potential for accumulating snow across the region, particularly near Lake Michigan.

According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, northern Indiana is included in a slight risk for heavy snow from Saturday through the following Friday, signaling a higher likelihood of one or more organized winter systems. The risk is highest in areas close to Lake Michigan, where colder air can enhance snowfall totals.

In northwestern Indiana, including South Bend, Elkhart, and LaPorte County, lake-enhanced snow bands could develop when winds align favorably. Those bands can quickly reduce visibility and create slick conditions along the Indiana Toll Road, U.S. 31, and Interstate 80/90.

Farther east, including Fort Wayne and Allen County, snow is more likely to arrive with passing systems rather than persistent lake bands. Even so, colder-than-normal temperatures favor steady accumulation, which could impact Interstate 69 and surrounding state roads during heavier snow periods.

The Indiana Department of Transportation urges drivers to monitor road conditions closely, allow extra travel time, and keep winter emergency kits in vehicles. With below-normal temperatures expected to persist, snow that falls may not melt quickly between systems.

More detailed timing and potential winter weather advisories are expected as the late-January window approaches, with clearer impacts becoming available by early next week.
