South Bend, Indiana – Drivers across northern Indiana are facing a slick and wintry start to New Year’s Day as freezing drizzle and lingering lake effect snow create hazardous travel conditions early this morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, a mix of overnight freezing drizzle and lake effect snow has produced slick spots on roads, especially in areas north of U.S. 6, including South Bend, Elkhart, La Porte, and St. Joseph County. Snow showers continue at times today, but additional accumulation is expected to remain light, generally under one inch.
Another weak system moves through later this afternoon and evening, bringing periods of light snow and possibly more freezing drizzle. While snowfall amounts stay minor, even small changes in precipitation type could quickly worsen road conditions. Untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses are most likely to remain icy through the day.
Temperatures remain cold and uncooperative, with highs only reaching the lower to mid-20s across northern Indiana. Overnight lows dip into the teens, allowing any moisture on roadways to refreeze tonight. Indiana State Police urge drivers to slow down, increase following distance, and avoid sudden braking during icy conditions.
By Friday, snow chances taper off and dry weather begins to take hold. Skies gradually clear, but temperatures remain below freezing, keeping winter firmly in place. Highs Friday through Sunday range from the mid-20s to lower 30s, with overnight lows in the teens.
While the weekend brings quieter weather, lingering ice may persist on shaded or untreated surfaces. Residents are encouraged to remain cautious during early morning and nighttime travel and to keep emergency supplies in vehicles.
The National Weather Service notes that no major storms are expected once today’s system exits, but cold conditions continue through the weekend. Additional updates will be issued if freezing drizzle or snow coverage becomes more widespread.
