Gary, Ind. – Streets and neighborhoods across northern Lake County are under a Flash Flood Warning Monday night as torrential rain overwhelms drainage systems and roadways. The National Weather Service in Chicago said rainfall rates of 3 to 4 inches an hour are expected through late evening, with flooding already underway in parts of Whiting.

According to the National Weather Service, the Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until 11:30 p.m. for northern Lake County, including Hammond, Gary, East Chicago, and surrounding communities. Automated gauges show up to 3 inches of rain have already fallen, with another 2 inches possible.

Flooding is likely in low-lying streets, underpasses, and near creeks and drainage ditches. Travel could quickly become dangerous along major corridors such as I-90, I-80/94, and U.S. 41 as water rises. Local officials urge residents to avoid driving into flooded intersections and to move to higher ground if water begins approaching homes or businesses.

Communities including Merrillville, Portage, Highland, Munster, Griffith, and Dyer are also at risk of rapid-onset flooding. Power outages and sewer backups may follow as ground saturation worsens.

The flash flood threat will persist until late Monday night, and additional alerts may be issued if storms continue to redevelop over the area.
