Northern Indiana – Residents should prepare for drastic weather changes this weekend, including snow, freezing rain, and dangerous wind chills.

The National Weather Service forecasts above-freezing temperatures on Friday, allowing some snow to melt during the day. However, rain is expected Friday evening before changing to snow late that night. By Saturday afternoon, rapidly falling temperatures will freeze any remaining melted snow.

Temperatures on Saturday night will drop between 7 and 13 degrees, with additional lake-effect snow likely in some areas. The bitter cold will intensify on Sunday night as an Arctic air mass moves in. Wind chills could plummet to between -10 and -20 degrees, creating potentially life-threatening conditions.

Officials urge residents to take precautions by securing outdoor items, avoiding unnecessary travel, and dressing warmly when outdoors. Those in areas prone to lake-effect snow should monitor forecasts closely.

Emergency preparedness experts recommend keeping an emergency kit with blankets, water, and food in vehicles. Cold temperatures are expected to persist into early next week, with temperatures not rising significantly until Tuesday.
