Fort Wayne, Ind. – Thickening wildfire smoke has prompted an Air Quality Action Day across Northern Indiana, with state officials warning residents to limit outdoor activity Tuesday due to unhealthy conditions.
According to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM), air quality levels are expected to reach the “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” category across more than 40 counties, including Allen, Elkhart, St. Joseph, La Porte, and Steuben. This alert—driven by elevated particulate matter from distant wildfires—remains in effect through Tuesday night.
The warning applies especially to children, seniors, and those with asthma or other respiratory issues. Outdoor exertion should be limited, and residents are encouraged to carpool, delay gas-powered equipment use until after 7 p.m., and keep home cooling systems efficient by setting thermostats to 75 degrees or higher.
Despite the poor air quality, skies across Fort Wayne and nearby regions will remain mostly sunny with highs in the mid-80s. Winds remain light, which could prolong smoke concentrations through midweek.
