South Bend, Indiana – Drivers across northern Indiana and southwest Michigan could face snow-covered roads and drifting snow through the Monday morning commute as lake effect bands continue off Lake Michigan.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 p.m. EST Monday for Northern La Porte, St. Joseph, Marshall and Starke counties in Indiana, along with Cass and Berrien counties in Michigan. Additional snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches are expected, with locally higher totals possible. Winds may gust to around 30 mph, causing blowing and drifting snow.
Elkhart County remains under advisory until 1 a.m. Monday, where an additional 1 to 2 inches — locally up to 3 inches — could create slick stretches on U.S. 20, the Indiana Toll Road and rural routes.
In Michigan, travel along I-94 and Red Arrow Highway in Berrien County may become hazardous at times as snow bands shift inland.
Motorists should reduce speed, increase following distance and check 511 for updated road conditions before heading out. Lake effect snow may ease by early Monday afternoon, but slick spots could linger beyond the advisory period.
