Elkhart, Indiana – Drivers across northern Indiana should prepare for prolonged hazardous travel conditions as lake effect snow continues to impact the region through Thursday, bringing accumulating snow, blowing drifts, and slick roadways.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through early Thursday afternoon for Elkhart, Starke, and northern and southern Kosciusko counties. Snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches are expected, with the highest totals favored west of IN-15 and along and north of U.S. 30. North to northwest winds gusting up to 35 mph will contribute to blowing and drifting snow, especially on east to west roadways.

In Elkhart, Warsaw, Plymouth, and surrounding communities, snow-covered roads and rapidly changing visibility are expected during periods of heavier lake effect snow bands. Bridges and overpasses will become slick quickly, even when nearby roads appear merely wet or slushy. The Wednesday evening and Thursday morning commutes are expected to see the most significant travel impacts.

Snow bands may vary sharply over short distances, making conditions unpredictable for drivers traveling between counties. Plowed roads could quickly become snow-covered again due to drifting.

Motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra time to reach destinations. Road conditions can be checked by calling 511. The advisory remains in effect through Thursday afternoon, and additional updates are possible if lake effect snow bands intensify or linger longer than expected.
