South Bend, Ind. – Summer will hit hard across Northern Indiana beginning Sunday as a stretch of dangerous heat takes hold, pushing afternoon heat indices to 100 degrees or higher through at least Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service, highs will reach the low to mid-90s each day, with humidity driving heat index values between 98 and 100 degrees from Sunday through Tuesday. Overnight lows will remain stubbornly warm in the 70s, offering little relief during the early summer heat wave.

Cities like Fort Wayne, South Bend, and Lafayette will feel the full weight of this oppressive air mass, with minimal wind and no major rain systems expected to cool things down. The heat will be cumulative, meaning the risk of heat-related illness increases each day — especially for those without air conditioning or working outdoors.

Residents are urged to limit strenuous activity to early morning or evening hours, drink plenty of water, and check on elderly neighbors and pets. Public cooling centers may open if the heat persists beyond Tuesday.

This will be the first extended heat event of the summer for Indiana, and it could stretch into late next week if conditions don’t shift.
