South Bend, Indiana – Storms arriving Monday night could be just the start, with a stronger and more organized round expected to hit northern Indiana by Tuesday afternoon and evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, isolated severe storms may develop Monday evening into the overnight hours under a marginal risk (level 1 of 5). These storms could produce large hail, gusty winds, and brief heavy rainfall, though confidence remains lower on exact placement.

The more impactful round arrives Tuesday, when a slight risk (level 2 of 5) expands across much of northern Indiana, including South Bend, Elkhart, Fort Wayne, and Warsaw. Storms are expected to intensify after 3 p.m., bringing the potential for damaging wind gusts near 60 mph, hail around 1 inch in diameter, and even an isolated tornado.

Key travel routes such as I-80/90, US-31, and I-69 could see sudden downpours and reduced visibility during peak travel hours. Areas near the Michigan state line, including La Porte and St. Joseph counties, may see stronger storms earlier in the afternoon.

Residents should secure loose outdoor items and stay alert for warnings, especially late Tuesday. Storms may continue into Tuesday night, with additional updates likely as timing and severity become clearer.
