Just after 7 a.m., the South Bend Fire Department was dispatched to the 300 block of East Colfax Avenue after a nearby tenant reported hearing yelling and seeing a man in the water behind the Cascade, the department said.
Upon arrival, firefighters were directed to the victim’s last known location. A swiftwater team entered the river and located the man in about 8 to 10 feet of water. According to the South Bend Fire Department, the victim, believed to be in his 40s or 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene. Fishing equipment was discovered nearby.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources has taken over the investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
