Michigan City, Ind. – Dangerous swimming conditions remain in place along the southern Lake Michigan shoreline as waves up to 6 feet pound the coast from northern La Porte County in Indiana through Berrien County in Michigan. Officials warn beachgoers to stay out of the water through Tuesday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, waves will hold at 4 to 6 feet overnight Sunday into Monday before slowly easing to 2 to 4 feet Monday night into Tuesday. Even as conditions improve, strong rip currents and high surf will continue to create life-threatening hazards.
Authorities caution that piers in Michigan City, New Buffalo, and St. Joseph will be heavily swamped, with the risk of large waves sweeping people into deeper water. Emergency managers urge swimmers and boaters to stay off piers and avoid entering the lake until conditions calm.
The greatest risk extends through late Tuesday, though currents may linger into midweek. Additional advisories could be issued if waves remain elevated.
