Lake County, IN – Drivers across northern Indiana are facing treacherous conditions through Sunday night as heavy snow transitions to lake effect bands, bringing blowing snow and near-zero visibility to major roadways including I-65, I-94, and US-24.
According to the National Weather Service, snowfall rates may reach an inch per hour at times Saturday, with the heaviest accumulations occurring along and north of US-24. By Sunday, colder air and gusty west-northwest winds will create lake effect snow showers, especially in LaPorte, Porter, and Lake counties. Blowing and drifting snow will significantly impact visibility on open stretches of road.
Travel will be dangerous on key highways such as I-65 between Merrillville and Gary, I-94 near Chesterton and Michigan City, and US-30 east of Valparaiso. Law enforcement warns visibility can drop from clear to zero in minutes within snow bands, especially Sunday as winds increase.
Officials urge drivers to stay off roads if possible and prepare for sudden whiteout conditions. Anyone traveling should keep phones charged, emergency kits in vehicles, and allow extra time between destinations.
Snow bands and gusty winds are expected to continue into late Sunday evening, with additional advisories possible depending on lake effect intensity.
