South Bend, IN – A man was killed early Saturday after a single-vehicle crash caused live electrical wires to fall onto his vehicle near the intersection of Kern and Fir Roads in St. Joseph County.

According to St. Joseph County Police, the crash occurred around 12 a.m. Saturday. Officers said the man had reportedly gotten out of the vehicle and initially refused medical treatment. Moments later, dispatchers reported the car had caught fire with the driver still inside.

Police said live power lines had fallen on the car, preventing officers, firefighters, and medics from reaching the man until utility crews from AEP arrived to cut power and secure the scene.

Once responders were able to approach, they discovered the driver had died from his injuries. Authorities confirmed he was the only occupant of the vehicle.

The crash remains under investigation.
