Fort Wayne, IN – Residents in northeast Indiana felt record-setting heat Sunday as Fort Wayne tied its daily high temperature record for September 28.

According to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana, the city reached 89 degrees, matching a mark last recorded in 1999. Historical data shows records date back as far as 1897, underscoring the rarity of late-season heat this strong.

The weather service noted that Sunday’s heat did not break the all-time hottest September temperature, which reached 100 degrees in 1953. The latest 90-degree day on record for Fort Wayne occurred on October 4, 1951.

Forecasters say no additional temperature records are expected in the immediate future. Slightly cooler conditions are in store this week, offering relief after the late-September heatwave.

The unusual warmth came after a stretch of otherwise seasonable fall weather, giving residents a brief return to summerlike conditions. While Sunday tied the daily record, officials emphasize that temperatures should moderate with highs more typical of early October in the days ahead.
