South Bend, Ind. – Dangerous heat and scattered thunderstorms will grip northern Indiana through Tuesday before cooler air settles in midweek. Heat indices will climb into the 90s today and Tuesday, creating uncomfortable and potentially hazardous conditions for outdoor activities.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, the best chance for storms this morning is west of I-69, shifting south of U.S. 30 by afternoon. Additional showers and storms may develop Tuesday into early Wednesday, though severe weather is not expected.

Along Lake Michigan, dangerous swimming conditions are a major concern today. A beach hazards statement remains in effect for Southern Berrien and La Porte Counties until 3 a.m. Tuesday. Forecasters warn that waves of 1 to 2 feet will increase to 3 to 4 feet by late afternoon, creating life-threatening rip currents and structural currents.

Travelers across U.S. 30 and I-69 could encounter reduced visibility and slick roads during downpours. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, limit strenuous activity outdoors, and avoid swimming in hazardous areas of Lake Michigan.

Relief is expected by mid to late week as highs ease into the upper 70s and lower 80s with lower humidity. More scattered showers may return late Wednesday.
