Fort Wayne, IN – A quick-moving cold front will bring light snow to northern Indiana this afternoon and evening before a sharp drop in temperatures later this week, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Northern Indiana.
Forecasters expect light snow accumulations of up to 1 inch, particularly in areas near Lake Michigan where lake-enhanced bands may briefly increase totals. Roads could become slick in spots during the afternoon commute as temperatures hover around the freezing mark.
Behind the front, much colder air will rush in late Thursday, sending overnight lows down to the single digits and lower teens. The coldest stretch arrives Friday morning, when wind chills could fall to near -10°F in open areas, making it feel dangerously cold for anyone outdoors.
According to the NWS, Thursday’s highs will range from 18 to 25 degrees, with overnight lows plunging to -3°F to 4°F. Conditions will stay frigid into Friday, with highs struggling to reach the upper 20s. The forecast shows another round of light snow possible Sunday, but the weekend will remain mostly dry and cold.
Residents across Fort Wayne, South Bend, Elkhart, and surrounding counties are urged to bundle up and use caution on roads as blowing snow and icy spots may develop Thursday night. The NWS advises limiting time outside and checking on vulnerable individuals and pets during the coldest hours.
