South Bend, Ind. – Patchy dense fog is reducing visibility to as low as two miles across northern Indiana this Wednesday morning, creating hazardous travel conditions for commuters. The fog, stretching into southern Lower Michigan and northwest Ohio, is expected to linger through the late morning before gradually lifting.
According to the US National Weather Service Northern Indiana, visibility in some pockets is ranging from two to five miles, with denser areas near open fields and waterways. Motorists are urged to slow down, turn on low-beam headlights, and allow extra travel time, especially on rural roads and major corridors like U.S. 20, I-69, and the Indiana Toll Road.
Drivers in cities including Fort Wayne, South Bend, Elkhart, and Angola should use caution when approaching intersections and merging lanes, where sudden visibility drops are more common. School buses and morning delivery routes may also be impacted.
Authorities advise avoiding abrupt lane changes, increasing following distance, and staying alert for pedestrians or stalled vehicles. Conditions are expected to improve by late morning, but drivers should remain alert for patchy fog returning overnight in low-lying areas.
