South Bend, IN – Northern Indiana is facing a potential heavy snow event through the Black Friday weekend as Arctic air sweeps across the Great Lakes from November 28–30. The influx of frigid air over the still-warm waters of Lake Michigan will generate bands of intense lake-effect snow and bitter cold extending into early next week.
According to the National Weather Service office in Northern Indiana, a moderate to high risk of heavy snow exists across northwestern and north-central Indiana, especially near South Bend, LaPorte, and Elkhart counties. Snowfall totals could range from 6–12 inches under the most persistent bands, with locally higher amounts possible east of Lake Michigan. Winds gusting 25–35 mph may create near-zero visibility and drifting snow along major roadways.
According to the Indiana Department of Transportation, hazardous travel is expected along I-80/90 (Indiana Toll Road), U.S. 31, and I-94 late Friday through Saturday morning. Slick bridges, reduced visibility, and blowing snow could make travel treacherous for post-Thanksgiving drivers and shoppers.
Temperatures will stay well below normal through the weekend, with highs in the upper 20s to near 30 and overnight lows in the teens. Residents are advised to prepare vehicles for winter conditions, avoid unnecessary travel during heavy snow bursts, and check local advisories before heading out.
