South Bend, Indiana – Light snow is expected across northern Indiana today and tonight, followed by a sharp turn toward colder conditions and recurring lake-effect snow this weekend into early next week, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters said 1 to 2 inches of snow are expected north of U.S. 30, with a dusting south of U.S. 30. Daytime highs today will range from 31° to 36°, allowing light accumulation on untreated roads, especially during steadier snow periods.

Colder air will filter in behind the system over the weekend. Highs are forecast to drop into the low to mid-20s Saturday and upper teens to low-20s Sunday, with wind chills near 0° Saturday, −5° Sunday, and as low as −15° by Monday morning.

The colder pattern will support steady, light lake-effect snow across the Michiana region, including South Bend, Elkhart, La Porte, and St. Joseph counties, with around 1 to 2 inches possible each day from Saturday through Monday. While daily amounts are modest, repeated rounds could lead to slick roads and reduced visibility at times.

Drivers are urged to allow extra travel time, especially near Lake Michigan where lake-effect bands can quickly cover roads. Cold-weather precautions are advised as wind chills plunge early next week.
